Protect your ideals

I read an article about Hanukkah where Rabbi Gary Gans from Congregation Beth Tikvah in Evesham, UK stated: "Historically, Hanukkah represents our ability to protect our ideals in the face of an overwhelming majority culture."
This got me thinking of how some situations make it difficult for many of us to stay true to ourselves at times.

There are moments when we feel our ideas may not be as important or valuable as the ones coming from someone who seems to be more confident, have more academic background or just a stronger personality than ours. I feel like this many times; then I try to remind myself that all opinions count.

Every person is unique, has a specific mission and is necessary to complement this world. There's no two people with the same essence, yet this is what makes the world move on and evolve.
It is vital to recognize our weaknesses as well; finding a balance between them and our talents helps us connect in a mature way with others together with being open to fresh input.

I just felt like pointing this out so when we light the Hanukkiah every night for eight nights (tonight being the second) we keep in mind that staying true to ourselves is a blessing and a way of life.

May these thoughts inspire you to pursuit and cherish your ideals even if you don't light the Hanukkah candles or The Festival of Lights is not a part of your tradition.

"..You are sure of yourself
and you raise your head
you are ready for your moment
When night falls you give in
and start hoping again the next day.."
( From "Or Chadash"- A New Light)
